  • Jute Factory designed in 1967 by architect Vann Molyvann (one of his first projects), inaugurated 30 Oct. 1968.
  • Closed in 1998
  • "In 2002, Chui Chheang, director of Battambang's Department of Industry, Mines and Energy (DoIME), said that "the reason (for closing) is that rice sacks made of jute are no longer wanted that much. People tend to use plastic bags rather than jute ones." Others familiar with the defunct small industry give different stories, including local political interference in necessary reforms at the factory, and a lack of sufficient raw jute for processing. The people of Ek Phnom say they are now considering abandoning the crop altogether." (source: Phnom Penh Post)
  • We heard that the premises have been converted into a rice milk factory, but it was impossible to get in, or even take photos from outside, when we visited the location in June 2022.
